Hazards Associated with Ship Repairers

April 25, 2023

Repair and maintenance operations expose ship repairers to inherently hazardous work conditions, working with complex machinery, toxic chemicals, and even at precarious heights and cramped confines. In such environments, even the slightest error in judgment can have devastating and long-lasting consequences.

Things for Ship Repairers to Watch For

In this article, we’ll talk about the many hazards associated with ship repairers and how to mitigate these risks through ship repairers insurance and proper safety protocols.

Respiratory Irritation and Systemic Poisoning

During welding operations, workers may face exposure to various hazardous vapors released from welding rods, flux, and metal coatings and finishes, including Nitrogen Dioxide, Ozone, Cadmium, Zinc Oxide, and more. Breathing in these substances can cause respiratory irritation and, in some cases, systemic poisoning.

To mitigate this risk, workers should always wear appropriate respiratory protection and ensure the work area is well-ventilated.

Paint Fumes

Paint fumes can have harmful short- and long-term health effects due to the presence of chemicals such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). People exposed to paint fumes may experience unpleasant symptoms, such as headaches, eye-watering, breathing problems, and dizziness. Other immediate symptoms include vision problems and lung and throat irritation.

To avoid such health complications, employers should provide training on the safe disposal and handling of paint and related materials to ensure the safety of workers.

Confined Spaces

Confined spaces like tanks, cargo hold, engine rooms, and pump rooms can present serious hazards like asphyxiation, fire, and exposure to toxic substances.

To minimize these risks, workers should only enter a confined space if they follow established procedures for entry and exit and know how to respond to emergencies.

Radiant Energy

Among the hazards associated with radiant energy, the most critical is exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Prolonged exposure to UV radiation can cause skin damage, including premature aging, sunburn, and an increased risk of skin cancer. Exposure to high levels of radiant energy can also cause damage to the eyes, including cataracts and permanent blindness.

For protection from radiant energy, workers involved in ship repairs and personnel observing the operation must wear personal protective equipment (PPE). It includes safety glasses, welding helmets, face shields, and goggles, depending on the type and intensity of the radiant energy.

Ship Repairers Insurance

For businesses that perform ship repair and maintenance services, ship repairers insurance is a must-have. This insurance typically includes the following:

  • Employee coverages such as workers’ compensation and Jones Act
  • General liability, protection, and indemnity, ship repairers legal liability, and other liability coverages
  • Business income, real and personal property, owned watercraft, and other property coverages

Without adequate and robust ship repairers’ insurance coverage, the hazards previously mentioned can have devastating financial consequences, potentially even leading to the closure of the business.
